Before the Flood is a documentary film that records a two-year journey undertaken by Leonardo DiCaprio, Academy Award winning actor and United Nations Messenger of Peace, in the pursue of the problems caused by global warming. All the serious problems of the world about which Rev. Masanobu Taniguchi, Seicho-No-Ie President has been raising the alarm, such as melting of ice in the Arctic Pole and Greenland, huge forest fires, people being forced to leave their homes because of the rise in sea levels, devastating extraction of fossil fuels, food shortage due to droughts, politicians and corporations’ disregard of the victims in their search for profit—they are all highlighted through their actual images. Along with DiCaprio the documentary also features Pope Francis, Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, and ex-president Barack Obama. Following its internet release on 30 October 2016, the film was watched more than 30 million times during the 11 days it was broadcasted free.
